WATER HEROES - AN INDIAN WATER STORY

India is a country that has a varied climate. It has heavy monsoons but it suffers great water crisis in many of its regions. The great desert region of Rajasthan faces tremendous water shortage almost every year.

Similarly the cold desert region of Ladakh is now facing water shortage because of depleting Glaciers.

Two water crusaders have made significant difference to the lives of villagers in these regions by their simple water conservation techniques.

Magsaysay is instrumental in reviving the ecosystem of Alwar District and enlightening millions of villagers about their responsibility to conserve rainwater by renovating and reconstructing ancient water storage system known as Johad. His experiment led to the construction of 10,000 water bodies in the region which has successfully revived 7 dormant rivers.

Chewang, a civil engineer and resident of Ladakh, has helped the agrarian community of Ladakh solve its water crisis by creating artificial glaciers. His glaciers are created using a simple technique of conserving water that is unutilized in the long winter season of Ladakh. His glaciers helps the villagers maximize their short agricultural season in summer and also helps them grow multiple crops
