THE GREAT INDIAN MARRIAGE BAZAAR

(Le Grand Bazaar du Mariage Indien)

Ruchika Muchhala

An inner look into the Indian arranged marriage system, which now has become a multi-billion dollar business.

In an era of modernization in India, arranged marriages have become a multi-billion dollar business. Elaborate match making meetings, complete with websites and screening systems have emerged, making the choice of the ideal marriage partner a business and not an affair of the heart.

The film intertwines the process of an arranged marriage by following two brides-to-be: Sonali, a police woman from a working class and Preeti, a middle-class family-oriented girl who is interested in finding a match from her specific ethnic community. Through these stories, the film looks at the modern-day crisis urban Indian women face when thrown into the great 'marriage bazaar'.

The complexities of Indian society have never been more explicitly shown in this very personal yet strangely macro view of T.G.I.M.B - The Great Indian Marriage Bazaar
